Gran Turismois a Neill Blomkamp-directed film based on the popular PlayStation franchise. It tells the tracks the tale of how Jann Mardenborough turned his love ofGran Turismogames into a fully-fledged motorsport career. Though the wide release for the USA is set for August 25, the film has aired in international markets, reception has been good thus far, and it has been reported that the film has already grossed $22.7 million.

TheGran Turismomovie is a star-studded affair featuring Archie Madekwe as Mardenborough, Djimon Hounsou as Mardenborough’s father, and Orlando Bloom as Nissan marketing executive Danny Moore. As Blomkamp has explained, to capture the most cinematic shots,filmographers used FPV drones to carry IMAX sensor-approved cameras. Several cockpit shots were used which will be familiar to franchise fans.

Critical reception to theGran Turismomovie has been positive overall, which reviewers complimenting the film’s authenticity and sincerity. It has not managed to avoid all criticism, and there has been some controversy regarding the film’s depiction of Mardenborough’s Nürburgring crash which led to the death of a spectator. Some have described it as insensitive, withPolygon calling it “a tasteless reframing of a fatal event.”
Gran Turismo’s road to theatres has featured a few obstacles. Most notably, it has had to contend with the SAG-AFTRA strike which has affected all of Hollywood. As a result, the movie had its August 11 release date delayed in the USA.
TheGran Turismomovie is but one of several video game adaptations Sony has in store. AGhost of Tsushimamovie is in the works, and fans can also look forward to television adaptations of theHorizonandGod of Warfranchises.
