Sony has clarified that its upcoming portable, codenamed “Next Generation Portable,” will come in more than one flavor.

That 3G support it mentioned won’t be featured in every NGP model. According to Sony Europe’s Andrew House, only one model will feature the 3G capability, and the service will (obviously) cost extra. All units, however, will ship with Wi-Fi support, explains House.

“So the user gets a choice,” he tellsEurogamer. “Wi-Fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that.”

Interesting, but not really surprising: similar devices, like Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle, offer similar options. It’s unclear who will be providing the 3G service for the NGP, or how much extra the functionality will cost.
