The best plot twists in video game history

Many of us grew up expecting games to have little in the way of a great plot, let alone having great plot twists. The greatest plot twist is that even though games have relatively recently flourished into an artform that can feature splendid storylines and character arcs, great game plots and plot twists aren’t that new of a thing. Let’s look at the best plot twists in the history of gaming....

The DTOID Show: Gaming Predictions of 2012!

If you’re anything like me, then chances are you can’t help but look forward to 2012 and salivate at all the delectable delicacies the videogame world has to offer us in the coming year. Not only is it a period for deep self-reflection, it’s also the best time of the year for rampant and unfounded speculation. Fortunately, that is precisely what Max and I have for you on today’s show, and make no mistake – what we lack in fake Jamaican accents, we make up for in unbridled idiocy....

The DTOID Show: Our Top Gaming Moments Of 2011!

Merry Christmas, everybody! I’m gonna keep this short because idiot thought it was a good idea to put a small tree in my house and then leave a bunch of presents sitting under it, so I need to go get rid of that crap before anybody trips on it or it becomes a fire hazard. In the meantime, here’s The Destructoid Show’s top stories of 2011. Some good, some bad, some of them barely aren’t even what you’d consider “stories,” but all of them are things from the last year that somehow involve video games....

The First Berseker: Khazan Crafting guide

Crafting is an important task inThe First Berserker: Khazan, but you only access it later in the game. Like in most video games, crafting depends on the use of certain materials you find on your grind. You can then craft different items with those resources that will help you clear in-game content and complete the missions. This guide will help you understand the process and master the use of the resources....

The Network Roundup: Pedal to the metal

Make no mistake, I love me some cars, especially ones I could never ever afford. Today we unfortunately lost a hugely influential and awesome contributor to the auto world, Carroll Shelby, but I am reminded of a car I have always been in love with. Living the life of a writer I will probably never go near a Shelby Mustang GT500 outside of an autoshow, but the iconic machine will always be part of my mechanical porn spank bank....

The sweet spot: Debating the optimal length for a video game

Maybe it’s not about the hours I got to the Dark World inA Link to the Pastin an afternoon. I’m aware the debate over game length has raged for so long that it’s old enough to drive. I also acknowledge that games just run longer than they did 25 years ago. Yet replayingA Link to the Pastand reaching this critical story moment so quickly was genuinely mindblowing. This game feltmassiveto me as a kid....

The Weekend Hotness: Heaven or Hell! Let’s rock!

Check out everything Destructoid did today I’m no fighting game player. However, I fell in love with theGuilty Gearseries long before I gave it a spin because of its sick-ass music. I never knew videogames could rock so hard! In honor of the recently announcedGuilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, let’s enjoy my favorite track from the series, Chipp Zanuff’s theme “Suck a Sage,” as performed during theGuilty Gear X BlazBlue Music LIVE 2011concert in Japan....

This Heroes of the Storm map is a lot to take in

Towers of Doom Prior to playing the newHeroes of the Stormmap,Towers of Doom, my only real exposure to it was reading the all-too-brief objective summary during the loading screen. Thank goodness I was only training with the AI. This map is bonkers, even when you know what’s going on. For one, each team’s core only has 40 HP, and heroes can’t do direct damage. Instead, they’ll need to capture control points (“altars”) that periodically pop up....

This portable GameCube is hot, gets its own music video

Console modder Tchay has given us the gift of a sick-ass portable GameCube this Christmas season. Now, we’ve seen plenty of hardware mods in the past, but not many are presented as a glamor reel / music video! Tchay did a bang-up job of editing some game footage (as played on the device, of course) to sync with “Thunderstruck” from the recentZeldatribute album25YEARLEGEND. Behold, The Envision! Most of the games on parade areZeldatitles, but there is someResiEvil,Beyond Good & Evil,Metroid Prime, and others as well....

Top ten game music tracks to get you pumped for the gym

Sound Card 014: Get ready to kick some ass! Like our last issue ofThe Sound Card, which focused onmusic to sleep to, this has also been on my back burner for some time. I have over 300 tracks on my exercise playlist in iTunes, and a lot of that is game music. I thought to myself, what better way to bring in the New Year with people hitting the gym to meet those weight loss goals than provide a list of ten tracks that I wouldn’t be caught without at the gym!...

Valve’s hands-off approach to moderation is part of a larger problem with game classification

The goalposts have changed, and precious few sales platforms are equipped to deal with it This week, Valve announced theywould permit any game to be hosted on its market-leading platform, Steam, as long as it did not contain illegal content and is not what can be classified as a “trolling game”. This met with praise from people who criticise what they perceive as any form of censorship, but also with a lot of annoyance and anger from people who felt that Valve was washing its hands of its responsibility to reduce hostility on the Steam marketplace....
