So many games coming in 2016
2016 marks the 30th anniversary ofDragon Questin Japan, and Square Enix is going all out for the celebration. During a live press event this morning, series creator Yuji Horii and producerRyutaro Ichimura detailed the many different ways the company would be honoring the storied franchise.
The celebration will kick off with the release ofDragon Quest Buildersfor the PS4, PS3, Vita andnot the PlayStation TVon January 28. In March, the company will releaseDragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3for the 3DS, followed byDragon Quest Heroes 2in May for the PS4, PS3, Vita and, we can only assume, not the PlayStation TV.
Unfortunately, the event ended without a release date forDragon Quest XI. There wasn’t even a new trailer or screenshots for the highly anticipated 3DS and PS4 game. There was, however, a release date announced for theMonster Quest Battle Scannerthat was announced last year. So they got that going for them.
Outside of video games,Dragon Questdevotees in Japan will be able to enjoy concerts, fan events and even a museum, or as we call them in America: places to take tacky selfies that we think make us look sophisticated. Square Enix also announced some sort of partnership with Universal Studios Japan.
None of these games have been announced for release outside of Japan, and given the series’ post-Wii/DS drought on western shores, I won’t be holding my breath. At least we have the 3DS releases ofDragon Quest VIIandDragon Quest VIIIto look forward to.
